Raton is located at the junction of I-25 and Hwys 87/64 at the base of the Raton Pass, seven miles from the Colorado border. Raton’s transportation network is complemented by bus lines, Amtrak rail service, and a general aviation airport. Being equidistant from the major metro areas of Denver, Albuquerque, and Amarillo (224 miles), Raton offers a great getaway location from the stress of big city life.

The town of Raton was originally founded at Willow Springs, a stop along the Santa Fe Trail. The land for the town was purchased through the Maxwell Land Grant in 1880 when the town came to be known as Raton.
The Sugarite Canyon State Park offers facilities for outdoor activities, including camping, hiking, and fishing. The NRA Whittington Center is the largest shooting range in the US, where visitors can enjoy skeet and high-power rifle shooting. One can also visit the Philmont Scout Ranch from Raton. Local festivals include the Balloon Rally and the International Santa Fe Trail. The Raton Municipal Golf Course provides facilities for golfers.
